UNcontaineD
Reducing waste by repurposing empty shipping containers for social good, specifically student and refugee housing. Europe has high shipping container disposal costs compared to other ports. Shipping companies haul empty containers to ports with cheaper disposal costs, and some will even dump containers overseas in spite of increasing regulations. These containers are recycled and downcycled by the disposal companies. The costs and energy consumed by moving empty containers away from Europe can be reduced if there was a local market for the reusable containers. The Netherlands, like many countries, is also having a housing crisis. This greatly impacts students and refugees who have fewer resources.
Infrastructural problem in ports and sustanability
How can we change the rail infrastructure and how we can improve the freight rail transport.
FLOCO
Following Mclean's vision, imagine a container ship design where a platform would be installed that could be released from the vessel with all the containers mounted on top of the platform. The vessel would be splatted into two parts, the first would be the main vessel with the engine and whatever a vessel needs and the second would be the releasable platform. In simpler terms, imagine a truck that pulling a container, now it is a vessel pulling this platfrom. After the vessel reaches its destination the floating platform is released and installed in the port so it can be handled or in case the vessel has to wait to be handled the platform is released into the sea near the port and the vessel is released from waiting in the queue and can set off to its next destination. The platforms could be divided in 2 or more platforms so they vessel's journey can be more flexible. In reality we have a trade of platform mounted with containers. FLOCO = FLOaiting COntainer
